UN Recognizes Indonesian Mosques as Global Development Models, Says Istiqlal Mosque Grand Imam

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The United Nations (UN) has acknowledged Indonesian mosques, particularly the renowned Istiqlal Mosque, as models for global mosque development, as stated by Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar during his Isra Miraj commemoration message in Jakarta on Thursday.

Grand Imam Umar shared his encounter with the United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé, who conveyed the UN’s inspiration drawn from Istiqlal Mosque’s development.

During the Isra and Miraj, Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad ascended to Heaven to receive the command of the five daily prayers from Allah.

“Istiqlal Mosque is not only a model for all of us in Indonesia because, praise be to God, the international community has begun emulating what Indonesia has done,” said Grand Imam Umar.

Mosques, as symbols of unity, attract a large number of participants with their diverse activities. Grand Imam Umar highlighted instances in European mosques where congregants spill onto the roads, leading to temporary closures to accommodate the overflow.

“In the United States, congregations participating in worship activities at mosques cannot be matched by anyone. Hence, awakening this collective spirit is essential,” emphasized Umar.

He shared that an interfaith community in Los Angeles sought his advice on attracting congregants to participate in religious activities, drawing inspiration from Istiqlal Mosque’s successful approach.

Grand Imam Umar emphasized that the pursuit of worldly pleasures and financial gain can leave people with empty hearts. Visiting a mosque, where individuals can find solace in the imam’s Quran recitation and the solidarity of communal prayers, serves to replenish their spirits.

Commemorating Isra Miraj, he asserted, is a means to enhance the spirit of collective participation in mosque activities, especially with the holy month of Ramadan approaching. The recognition from the UN reflects the global impact of Indonesia’s approach to mosque development, showcasing it as a model for fostering unity, spirituality, and community engagement.
