President Shavkat Mirziyoyev Casts His Vote in Legislative Chamber Elections
Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: Uzbekistan is holding pivotal elections today for the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and the Councils of People’s Deputies. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, accompanied by his family, cast his vote at polling station No. 59 in the Mirzo Ulugbek district of Tashkent. This election marks a significant step in the country’s democratic evolution, emphasizing citizens’ right to vote and equality, as guaranteed under Article 128 of Uzbekistan’s Constitution.
Five political parties are participating in the elections: the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businesspeople – the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the Democratic Party “Milliy Tiklanish,” the Ecological Party, the People’s Democratic Party, and the Social Democratic Party “Adolat.” Conducted under the slogan “My choice is a prosperous Motherland,” the election reflects heightened socio-political engagement within the country.
For the first time, the elections to the Legislative Chamber are being conducted through a majoritarian-proportional, or mixed electoral system, in which 75 deputies are elected directly by individual vote, while another 75 are chosen through party lists. This new system aims to reflect voters’ choices more accurately and aligns with reforms that enhance Uzbekistan’s electoral framework.
The election process has also seen advancements in digitalization through the “E-Saylov” information system, increasing transparency and efficiency. Furthermore, electoral legislation has been overhauled to align with democratic standards, establishing the Central Electoral Commission to oversee fair elections. Reflecting a commitment to gender equality, a minimum of 40% female representation among candidates from each party has been mandated.
To ensure compliance with international standards, more than 850 observers from international organizations, including the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, CIS, SCO, and the Organization of Turkic States, are monitoring the election. Voting facilities have been set up in 5,770 district and 11,028 precinct election commissions, with 57 polling stations also established across 40 foreign countries.
During his visit, President Mirziyoyev expressed appreciation to the citizens actively participating in the elections, acknowledging their commitment to shaping the nation’s future and promoting democratic principles.
