Indonesian Language Proficiency Index Reaches 88.24 in 2023

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: In a significant revelation, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology disclosed that the Indonesian Language Proficiency Index attained an impressive level of 88.24 in the year 2023. This announcement was made by M. Abdul Khak, the head of the Language and Literature Development Center, during the “National Dissemination of Indonesian Language Proficiency” event held on Thursday.

The Indonesian Language Proficiency Index for 2023 was derived from the average scores of participants in the Indonesian Language competency oral and written exams, along with their grasp of language terminology. Proficiency in the Indonesian language was assessed through the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI), a comprehensive evaluation taken by thousands of participants, including students, professionals, and foreign nationals.

Last year, the UKBI Adaptive Version witnessed the participation of 267,064 individuals from approximately 2,293 institutions. The diverse pool of participants spanned 28 professions, 426 districts/cities, and included foreign nationals from 13 countries.

Among the participants, 110,725 were junior high school students, and over 130 thousand were high school students. Professionals, comprising 5,773 individuals, and 115 foreigners from various countries such as Timor Leste, the Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Italy, and Germany, also took part in the proficiency test.

Khak highlighted that although the UKBI was paper-based in the previous year, a new LAN-based computer version has been developed. This allows test participants to take the test remotely, leveraging the internet. However, he acknowledged that the system is still in the process of optimization.

“UKBI is entering an adaptive version, which can be very maximal because it can be done anywhere and anytime,” Khak mentioned.

The scores and proficiency levels documented in the UKBI Certificate are envisioned to serve as the foundation for mapping, screening, and enhancing the competence of Indonesian human resources across various fields of work and levels of education.
