Chinese Envoy Urges Restraint Amid UN Security Council Emergency Session on Iran's Retaliatory Strike

New York, The Gulf Observer: In a crucial session convened by the United Nations Security Council on Sunday, a Chinese envoy issued a call for all relevant parties to exercise utmost restraint and avert further escalation in the wake of Iran’s retaliatory strike on Israel.

Dai Bing, the charge d’affaires of China’s permanent mission to the UN, highlighted the pressing need for de-escalation amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict, emphasizing the international community’s collective demand for an immediate ceasefire. Dai underscored the gravity of the situation, expressing deep concern over the exacerbation of regional tensions and the profound ramifications of prolonged conflict.

Pointing to the recent airstrike on Iran’s diplomatic compound in Syria, Dai condemned the violation of international law and sovereignty, emphasizing the imperative of resolving disputes in accordance with established norms and principles. He urged all parties to exercise restraint and pursue peaceful avenues for resolution, underscoring the pivotal role of the UN Charter and international law in averting further escalation.

Emphasizing the centrality of the Palestinian issue in the broader Middle East context, Dai stressed the urgent need for effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2728 and reiterated China’s support for a comprehensive two-state solution. He called upon the international community, particularly influential nations, to contribute constructively to regional peace and stability.

The emergency session, convened at Israel’s request amid deliberations over potential countermeasures against Iran, reflects the heightened tensions in the region. However, Wang Jin, director of the Israel Research Center at Northwest University of China, assessed the likelihood of further escalation as relatively limited, citing Iran’s public announcement of military cessation and the measured response from the United States.

While acknowledging the potential for unforeseen factors to fuel escalation, Wang underscored efforts by the US to mitigate tensions through mediation and coordination, signaling a concerted push to prevent further destabilization in the region.

As deliberations continue within the Security Council and among key stakeholders, the international community remains vigilant, cognizant of the imperative of de-escalation and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions to mitigate conflict and promote enduring peace in the Middle East.
