U.S. Secretary of State and President Ilham Aliyev Discuss Bilateral Relations

Baku, The Gulf Observer: In a significant diplomatic exchange, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken engaged in a phone conversation with President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as reported by media. The discussion underscored the advancing peace agenda between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the importance of U.S.-Azerbaijani bilateral relations.

Secretary Blinken commended the strides made towards peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, reiterating the United States’ commitment to supporting the normalization of relations between the two nations. He emphasized the urgency for both parties to sign the peace agreement soon. Highlighting the value the U.S. places on its relationship with Azerbaijan, Blinken pointed to the collaborative efforts in tackling climate change and enhancing the energy sector. He also assured that the U.S. remains steadfast in fostering renewed and strengthened bilateral relations with Azerbaijan, pledging support for the successful hosting of COP29 by Azerbaijan.

President Aliyev expressed appreciation for the United States’ proactive role in the peace process and detailed Azerbaijan’s efforts in promoting peace and normalization. He emphasized the necessity for Armenia to relinquish its territorial claims against Azerbaijan, as stipulated in Armenia’s constitution, laws, and regulations, to progress the peace agenda.

Furthermore, President Aliyev called for the official termination of the OSCE Minsk Group’s activities, asserting that the group and its associated institutions are no longer relevant. He highlighted the enduring and successful cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States in the energy sector and the joint endeavors in climate change mitigation, particularly in preparation for COP29. The Azerbaijani President thanked the United States for its support in ensuring the success of the upcoming conference and advocated for elevating bilateral ties to a new level of cooperation.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the robust exchange of letters and reciprocal visits between their countries, sharing views on key issues such as human rights, democracy, and the adherence to internal laws.
