Oman Undertakes Strategic Restoration of Historical Forts to Boost Heritage Tourism and Investment

A’Rustaq, The Gulf Observer: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism of Oman has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the nation’s rich cultural and architectural legacy through the restoration of historic forts and towers—an initiative aimed at strengthening cultural tourism, revitalizing local economies, and creating investment opportunities in the heritage sector.
The Department of Heritage and Tourism in South Al Batinah Governorate is currently overseeing major restoration works at A’Rustaq Fort, Al Khasfah Tower, and Al Uwayd Tower. The ministry has emphasized that these projects are being implemented in accordance with the highest technical standards while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
In line with its sustainability goals, the ministry has adopted measures such as producing traditional “Sarooj” mortar locally at a dedicated facility under its supervision, and importing high-grade “Kandal” wood to meet structural and heritage specifications. These efforts are aimed at enhancing restoration quality, ensuring authenticity, and reducing project expenses.
Dr. Al-Mu’tasim Nasser Al Hilali, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in South Al Batinah, stated that the primary objective behind restoring these iconic structures is to safeguard Oman’s cultural heritage for future generations. “Each site embodies the architectural character of its historical era and represents a living narrative of the region’s history—both documented and oral,” he said.
Al Hilali added that heritage landmarks such as forts and towers are vital to the Sultanate’s cultural tourism strategy, offering opportunities for public and private sector investment and enriching the visitor experience. These restored sites are envisioned not only as monuments of the past but as dynamic components of local development and tourism diversification.
He further noted that heritage and museum development projects are aligned with the ministry’s strategic vision to establish Oman as a regional leader in cultural heritage management and a globally recognized sustainable tourism destination.
The restoration efforts in A’Rustaq and surrounding areas reflect Oman’s broader ambition to blend preservation with innovation, ensuring its unique historical assets continue to inspire, educate, and attract visitors from around the world.
