Abiy Ahmed Inaugurates Aysha-II Wind Power Project

Addis Ababa, The Gulf Observer: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on Tuesday officially inaugurated the Aysha-II Wind Power Project, marking a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s renewable energy and energy security agenda.
Located in the Somali Region, the Aysha-II Wind Power Project is described as a flagship investment and a cornerstone of the country’s long-term energy strategy. With an annual electricity generation capacity of 467 gigawatt-hours (GWh), the project is expected to provide reliable and scalable power to support Ethiopia’s growing, technology-driven economy.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the strategic importance of the Aysha plains, noting that the area is one of East Africa’s premier wind corridors. He emphasized that the project’s geographic location, close to neighbouring borders, positions Ethiopia to play a central role in regional energy trade and cross-border power integration.
The Prime Minister further stated that the project reflects Ethiopia’s broader vision of transforming its natural resources into engines of shared prosperity. Guided by the national philosophy of Medemer, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy in a way that strengthens economic cooperation and physical connectivity across the Horn of Africa.
The Aysha-II Wind Power Project is expected to contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s clean energy targets, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and reinforce the country’s ambition to become a regional hub for sustainable energy development.
