Abu Dhabi Transforms Public Parks into Outdoor Classrooms to Foster Environmental Learning

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: Public parks in Abu Dhabi are evolving beyond recreational spaces, becoming dynamic outdoor classrooms that connect students with nature and enrich their educational experience.
Through tailored programmes for different school levels, students now explore biodiversity, discover native plants and animals, and learn environmental responsibility through hands-on activities that link theory with practice.
Umm Al Emarat Park has emerged as a model, offering specialised educational packages since 2016. Primary pupils explore desert plants and animals, preparatory students learn about Bedouin hospitality, sustainability, and desert adaptation, while secondary-level workshops focus on ecosystems and the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. To date, more than 80,000 students have participated, including 3,372 in the 2024–2025 academic year.
“Our aim is to combine learning and fun in the heart of nature, opening doors of discovery for students through interactive experiences,” said Rasha Qabbalawi, spokesperson for Umm Al Emarat Park. She added that the park seeks to strengthen young generations’ connection to Emirati heritage, enhance awareness of sustainability, and expand partnerships with schools.
Abu Dhabi City Municipality is also advancing the initiative by developing public parks into educational spaces equipped with modern facilities and environmental programmes. These include workshops on biodiversity, water conservation, recycling, and sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, the municipality plans closer collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education and Knowledge to integrate parks into school curricula, creating open-air learning laboratories that inspire a love of nature and social responsibility.
