Turkmenistan

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved financing for a new initiative aimed at enhancing the quality and increasing the number of nurses and midwives in Turkmenistan, the bank’s press office announced on Thursday.

The funding package includes a $75 million loan and a $2 million grant from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR). The project, titled Improving Nursing Quality and Capacity, marks ADB’s first engagement in Turkmenistan’s healthcare sector and seeks to expand access to high-quality medical services while strengthening the country’s nursing education system.

As part of the initiative, a new climate-resilient Ashgabat Nursing School will be constructed, featuring modern laboratories, dormitories, a private mother-friendly room, and an edible garden to promote healthy nutrition. The project also encompasses the procurement of advanced educational and medical equipment, as well as the modernization of teaching methods and curricula to align with international standards.

The total cost of the project is $98 million, including $23 million in counterpart financing provided by the Government of Turkmenistan.

The initiative will emphasize the enhanced role of nurses within the national healthcare system, upgrading the skills of faculty and healthcare professionals, fostering international collaboration, and promoting the exchange of best practices.

ADB, a regional development bank, is committed to promoting sustainable economic growth and development across Asia and the Pacific through loans, grants, and technical assistance.
