Al Jabal Al Sharqi Emerges as a Prime Ecotourism Hub Under Oman’s Vision 2040

Al Dakhiliyah, The Gulf Observer: The majestic Al Jabal Al Sharqi is undergoing a transformative shift, positioning itself as a key contributor to domestic tourism and local community empowerment, thanks to concerted efforts by the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.
Sheikh Hilal Said Al Hajri, Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, affirmed that Al Jabal Al Sharqi is now a focal point in the governorate’s sustainable tourism development strategy. Speaking to Oman News Agency (ONA), he highlighted ongoing initiatives to enhance service infrastructure, regulate visitor access, and ensure a safe and balanced tourism experience in line with environmental preservation standards.
One of the flagship initiatives is the “Al Jabal Al Sharqi Oasis” project, spanning 10,000 square metres, designed to elevate the site’s year-round appeal. The project, currently under tender review, includes men’s and women’s prayer halls, a 300-square-metre investment restaurant, an outdoor theater, 13 seating canopies, pedestrian walkways, and open leisure areas — all envisioned to deliver a comprehensive tourism experience.
Governor Al Hajri emphasized that such developments represent the practical application of “Oman Vision 2040,” by harnessing the unique environmental and geographical potential of each wilayat. He also stressed the project’s strong focus on supporting entrepreneurship and SMEs, which are central to boosting local employment and service innovation in the tourism sector.
Al Jabal Al Sharqi, which rises over 2,000 metres above sea level, offers a cool climate year-round and is increasingly popular among camping and adventure enthusiasts. Infrastructure upgrades are being designed to meet growing demand, with a clear emphasis on community engagement and youth participation in project execution and economic initiatives.
In alignment with this vision, Sheikh Sulaiman Said Al Azri, Wali of Al Hamra, announced that the “Al Hamra Tourism 2025” festival will take place from August 1 to August 30, in Al Jabal Al Sharqi. The month-long event will feature a diverse range of family-friendly, cultural, and adventure activities, promoting the area as a vibrant tourism destination.
Festival highlights include sunrise-viewing excursions, mountain horse rides, designated hiking trails, 4×4 peak tours, and sports activities such as trail running and cycling. A camping zone equipped with full amenities, including power stations and restrooms, is also planned. Notable additions this year include a glass skywalk viewpoint overlooking Al Hamra and a modern stargazing platform with advanced telescopes — offering an immersive blend of ecotourism and science exploration.
The event aims to foster a fertile ground for youth-led businesses and local entrepreneurship while enhancing cultural awareness and economic vitality. Food courts, cafés, and dedicated entertainment areas for children will round out the program, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.
As Al Jabal Al Sharqi continues to shine on Oman’s tourism map, the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate reaffirms its commitment to sustainable investment, community empowerment, and the responsible development of natural and heritage assets. These efforts reflect Oman’s broader strategy for balanced, inclusive, and environmentally conscious national growth under Oman Vision 2040.
