Azerbaijan Calls on Armenia to Fulfill Obligations on Opening Regional Communications

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan has reiterated its stance on the necessity for Armenia to honor its commitments regarding the opening of regional communications, emphasizing that Yerevan has yet to take concrete steps toward fulfilling its obligations.

Aykhan Hajizade, Spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued a statement in response to an article by the Armenian Prime Minister, published by the Armenpress news agency, regarding communication links in the region.

“It is well known that Armenia, having occupied Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized sovereign territories for nearly 30 years and causing the blockade of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, has not made a positive contribution to the real negotiation process for the opening of communications in the four years following the 44-day Patriotic War,” Hajizade stated.

He noted that despite Armenia’s awareness of its written and signed obligations concerning the opening of communications between Azerbaijan’s western regions and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, it has failed to act upon them.

“Overall, Armenia’s proposals for essentially unnecessary, complex-to-execute, and practically lengthy routes serve to divert attention away from the process and obligations,” Hajizade added, suggesting that Yerevan’s approach has been counterproductive to regional connectivity efforts.

Hajizade stressed that if Armenia is genuinely committed to opening communication links, it must cease evading its responsibilities and take practical steps that align with the new regional realities.

The issue of unblocking regional transport corridors has been a key topic of negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia in post-conflict discussions, with Baku advocating for the full implementation of agreements reached as part of peace efforts.
