Blinken Congratulates President Ilham Aliyev on the 30th Anniversary of "Contract of the Century"

Baku, The Gulf Observer: In a formal letter to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended his congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the “Contract of the Century,” highlighting Azerbaijan’s pivotal role in the global energy sector. This milestone agreement, which was signed three decades ago, marked a turning point in Azerbaijan’s rise as a major energy supplier.

In his message, Secretary Blinken emphasized the significance of this year’s commemoration, especially as Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29. “It is my pleasure to congratulate you and the people of Azerbaijan on the 30th anniversary of the Contract of the Century, which helped elevate Azerbaijan into a major energy supplier. This year’s commemoration is especially significant as Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29,” the letter stated.

Blinken also recognized Azerbaijan’s longstanding contribution to the global energy transition and its commitment to renewable energy development. “Azerbaijan’s commitment to the global energy transition is built on your country’s decades-long history as a reliable partner in the energy sector. We welcome your efforts to deploy renewable energy and develop green energy export routes, which have the potential to transform the region and reinforce Azerbaijan’s pioneering role,” he added.

The Secretary of State underscored the enduring cooperation between the United States and Azerbaijan in the energy sector and reaffirmed the U.S. readiness to expand this partnership. “As I mentioned on our call today, the United States is prepared to expand our cooperation and stands ready to engage with Azerbaijan on various important issues, including global energy transition and Azerbaijan’s pursuit of green energy,” Blinken concluded.

The “Contract of the Century,” signed in 1994, was a landmark agreement that brought together major oil companies to develop Azerbaijan’s vast oil fields in the Caspian Sea, propelling the nation into the global energy spotlight.
