Oman Launches National Programme for Artificial Intelligence

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman has officially launched its “National Programme for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Digital Technologies,” marking a significant step toward realizing the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. The programme aims to make information and communications technologies a key driver of the national economy.

The programme, which spans the period from 2024 to 2026, includes various initiatives designed to align Oman with global advancements in artificial intelligence. Among its key components are:

  • A National Platform for Open Data to support entrepreneurs, investors, and decision-makers by providing essential data.
  • A National Centre for Research and Development in Artificial Intelligence to assist researchers and academics in AI-driven innovation.
  • An AI Studio that will serve as a collaborative space for IT specialists, companies, and institutions seeking technical solutions.
  • An Omani Language Model designed to be well-versed in Omani cultural, historical, artistic, and scientific content using generative AI.
  • A Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), established in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and the World Economic Forum, to enhance the adoption of advanced technologies.

In addition to these initiatives, the programme will implement computing projects aimed at spreading awareness, enhancing research, and promoting the adoption of computing applications in various sectors.

Eng. Said Hamoud Al Ma’awali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, stated that the programme builds on the success of the Executive Programme for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technologies, which was launched in 2022. He explained that the new initiatives would lay the groundwork for the integration of AI applications and digital technologies in Oman, with the broader goal of creating a sustainable and resilient digital economy.

“The programme emphasizes the introduction of AI applications across economic and development sectors,” Al Ma’awali told Oman News Agency (ONA). “Our goal is to localize advanced digital technologies, ensure good governance, and improve Oman’s ranking in global indices, including placing the country among the top 50 in the Government AI Readiness Index.”

The National AI Programme is also expected to bolster investments in AI technology and support the growth of emerging AI companies, contributing to the creation of new AI data centres. Additionally, the initiatives aim to increase the contribution of the digital economy to Oman’s GDP to 10 percent by 2040, up from 2 percent in 2021.

Through these comprehensive measures, Oman reaffirms its commitment to applying the latest digital technologies to drive economic growth and achieve the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
