Bruneian Climbers Conquer Seven Peaks in Sumatra, Including Indonesia’s Highest Active Volcano

Sumatra, The Gulf Observer: The Petualang Rimba team, led by Cikgu Kassim and Aida Saidi, successfully scaled seven major peaks across Sumatra from August 11 to 18, marking a remarkable mountaineering achievement for Brunei Darussalam.
The expedition, part of the “7 Summits Sumatera” challenge, covered Mount Tujuh, Mount PRT, Mount Duri, Mount Lumut, Mount Madura Basi, Mount Kerinci, and Mount Talang. Among these, Mount Kerinci—towering at 3,805 metres—stands as Indonesia’s highest active volcano.
Bruneian climbers Ramadhan and Cikgu Dean joined fellow mountaineers from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore in tackling steep terrains, unpredictable weather, and grueling trekking routes. Their summit push on Mount Kerinci began at 4:30am following a nine-hour ascent through several base camps, with the team reaching the peak by 5:00am before safely descending.
“Our mission, Road to Kerinci for the 7 Summits Sumatra, was both a physical and mental test but one that rewarded us with breathtaking views,” said team leader Cikgu Kassim.
Team member Aida Saidi described the accomplishment as not only a proud moment for Brunei but also an inspiration for aspiring mountaineers across the nation.
