China Achieves Record Summer Grain Harvest in 2024
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China has reported a significant increase in its summer grain harvest for the year 2024, marking another successful season for the country’s agriculture sector, according to official data released on Friday.
The National Bureau of Statistics revealed that China’s summer grain production reached 149.78 million tonnes this year, showing a notable rise of 2.5 percent, or nearly 3.63 million tonnes, compared to the previous year. The survey indicated that the total sown area for summer grains expanded to 26.613 million hectares, up by 4,500 hectares from last year, demonstrating stability in agricultural acreage management.
The output of wheat, a significant component of China’s summer grain sector, encompassed over 23 million hectares, marking a slight increase of 0.1 percent from the previous year. Notably, the yield per hectare rose to 5,628 kilograms, up by 2.5 percent or 135.4 kilograms compared to last year’s figures.
Henan Province emerged as the top producer among provincial regions, achieving a summer grain output of nearly 37.86 million tonnes, showcasing its pivotal role in China’s agricultural landscape.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang, during a visit to Henan Province in May, emphasized the importance of securing a bumper summer grain harvest and promoting agricultural innovation. Premier Li highlighted the need for enhanced mechanized harvesting across regions, effective disaster prevention measures, and adequate preparation for the upcoming summer sowing season. He also stressed the prudent utilization of minimum grain purchase prices to ensure favorable returns for farmers.
The robust performance of China’s summer grain sector in 2024 underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to bolster food security and sustain agricultural productivity amid evolving global challenges.
