China to Accelerate Waste-Recycling System Construction for Green Development
In a significant move towards fostering sustainable development, China’s State Council has recently issued a comprehensive guideline outlining specific goals and measures aimed at expediting the establishment of a robust waste-recycling system. The initiative is designed to solidify China’s green and low-carbon foundation, aligning with the nation’s commitment to achieving high-quality development.
The guideline underscores the adoption of the circular economy concept, emphasizing the principles of “reduce, reuse, and recycle” (3Rs). The overarching objective is to enhance resource utilization efficiency through precision management, effective recycling practices, and the efficient utilization of waste.
According to the document, the key targets to be achieved by 2025 include the establishment of a waste-recycling system that covers all fields and links. The annual utilization volume of bulk solid waste, encompassing materials such as tailings, fly ash, and coal gangue, is projected to reach 4 billion tonnes. Simultaneously, the comprehensive utilization rate of new bulk solid waste is anticipated to reach 60 percent.
In addition, the guideline sets ambitious targets for the annual utilization volume of major renewable resources like scrap steel, scrap copper, and scrap aluminum, which is expected to reach 450 million tonnes by 2025.
A pivotal aspect of the plan involves the development of the resource recycling industry, spanning all facets of production and daily life. The guideline aims to achieve a target of 5 trillion yuan (approximately 703.87 billion U.S. dollars) in the annual output of the industry by 2025, demonstrating China’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and economically viable recycling sector.
Looking towards the future, the guideline envisions the establishment of a comprehensive, efficient, and orderly waste recycling system in China by 2030. The nation aims to elevate its overall waste recycling capabilities to rank among the highest globally, showcasing a commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.
This ambitious initiative reflects China’s determination to proactively address environmental challenges, promoting a harmonious coexistence between economic development and ecological well-being. The outlined goals and measures are expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of waste management and resource utilization in the country, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices on the global stage.
