Chinese and Iranian Foreign Ministers Hold Phone Talks on Israel-Iran Tensions

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, engaged in telephone discussions on Monday to address the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The dialogue primarily focused on Iran’s response to the attack on its consular section in Damascus, Syria, and the broader regional dynamics.

During the phone call, Amir-Abdollahian provided Minister Wang with insights into Iran’s stance regarding the recent attack on the consular section of its embassy in Damascus. He underscored Iran’s perception that the United Nations Security Council had not adequately addressed the incident, emphasizing Iran’s inherent right to self-defense in the face of sovereignty violations.

Amidst acknowledging the sensitivity of the current regional landscape, Amir-Abdollahian conveyed Iran’s commitment to exercising restraint, averting further escalation of tensions.

In response, Minister Wang, a key figure in the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, unequivocally condemned the attack on the Iranian embassy’s consular section. He labeled the assault as a grave transgression of international law, firmly rejecting such acts.

Minister Wang also expressed China’s recognition of Iran’s assertion that its response was limited and driven by the imperative of self-defense. China commended Iran’s pledge not to target regional or neighboring nations and its consistent pursuit of a policy of amicable relations.

Asserting confidence in Iran’s ability to manage the situation effectively while safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity, Minister Wang urged for swift implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2728 to resolve the Gaza conflict and prevent further humanitarian crises.

Furthermore, Minister Wang affirmed China’s willingness to engage in ongoing communication with Iran to facilitate a comprehensive, equitable, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue.
