Chinese Envoy Urges International Cooperation to Address Humanitarian Crisis in Syria

New York, The Gulf Observer: In a compelling address delivered at the United Nations Security Council briefing on Syria, Geng Shuang, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, called upon the international community to unite in concerted efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Syria while advocating for a political resolution to the longstanding Syrian conflict.

Acknowledging the collaborative endeavors of the Syrian government and the United Nations in facilitating aid delivery through operational border crossings, Geng Shuang urged all concerned parties to actively collaborate to facilitate cross-line deliveries, thereby ensuring effective humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.

Highlighting the imperative of scaling up humanitarian assistance to Syria, Geng emphasized the necessity for providing sufficient and unearmarked financial support to early recovery projects across the nation. He also condemned unilateral sanctions and resource exploitation, which have impeded Syria’s economic recovery, social development, and the welfare of its people, calling for their immediate cessation.

Furthermore, Geng underscored China’s support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, echoing the recent reaffirmation of the Arab League’s commitment to these principles and its opposition to external interference. He emphasized the potential of regional support in invigorating the political settlement process, welcoming UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s comprehensive engagements with all stakeholders on the implementation of Resolution 2254.

Emphasizing the importance of a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process, Geng stressed the necessity of fostering dialogue and consultation to achieve a solution acceptable to all parties involved. Additionally, he underscored the persistent threat of terrorism to Syria’s political progress, expressing support for the Syrian government’s efforts to combat terrorism and maintain security and stability.

Regarding the recent escalations in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and Israel’s airstrikes on Syrian territory, Geng expressed deep concern and urged all parties to exercise restraint and prevent further exacerbation of tensions. He called on major countries outside the region to play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation.

In conclusion, Geng urged the international community to redouble its collective efforts to manage the conflict in Gaza and capitalize on the unconditional Ramadan ceasefire to push for a permanent cessation of hostilities, thereby fostering peace and stability not only in the Middle East but also in Syria.
