Defense Chief Teodoro Urges Filipinos to Uphold Independence on National Heroes’ Day

Manila, The Gulf Observer: Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Monday called on Filipinos to defend the nation’s independence, stressing that safeguarding sovereignty is a collective duty, not the responsibility of a select few.

“Standing up for our independence is not the duty of only a few, but of all Filipinos,” Teodoro said in his National Heroes’ Day message.

He underscored that the spirit of patriotism and heroism lives on in modern-day Filipinos, citing the sacrifices of overseas workers, health professionals, fisherfolk, athletes, and teachers who continue to serve their families, communities, and the nation.

Teodoro also urged the public to honor past heroes who made great sacrifices for freedom. “We must honor the sacrifices and greatness demonstrated by our past heroes who had upheld our sovereignty in just, proper, and peaceful means, towards a Philippines that will not be oppressed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Philippine Army commander Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete echoed the tribute, saying the entire force pays respects to both past and present heroes whose examples of courage and service continue to inspire the country.

Nafarrete added that the true message of National Heroes’ Day goes beyond sacrificing one’s life, emphasizing instead the importance of making just, right, and patriotic choices in daily life.
