Ethiopian Prime Minister Inaugurates Historic Aviation Expo for Air Force’s 90th Anniversary

Bishoftu, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially opened the Aviation Expo 2026 on January 23, 2026, marking the 90th anniversary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Air Force and highlighting the nation’s growing stature in aviation, technology, and defence.
Held under the theme “Let’s enter the future of aviation together,” the Expo was launched in Bishoftu with the Prime Minister accompanied by First Lady Zinash Tayachew and Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, underscoring the event’s national significance.
The anniversary celebration, dubbed “The Lions of the Ethiopian Sky,” featured a historic aerial exhibition showcasing over 50 jet fighters and various specialised aircraft, reflecting the rapid modernisation and operational capabilities of the Ethiopian Air Force.
High-level international participation marked the Expo, including air force commanders from approximately 35 African nations and representatives from 10 countries outside Africa. The event also hosted the third African Air Force Forum, fostering collaboration on security and technological development among participating nations.
Defense Minister Ayisha Mohammed described the Air Force as a “national treasure” and emphasised its role as a model institution for the continent, urging stronger cooperation among African air forces.
The Aviation Expo 2026 continues to feature a series of air and ground demonstrations, further marking Ethiopia’s advancing role in aviation and defence across Africa and beyond.
