Fidan Calls for Increased Efforts to Secure Full UN Membership for Palestine

Madrid, The Gulf Observer: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan underscored the need for heightened global efforts to secure full United Nations (UN) membership and international recognition of Palestine during a high-level meeting in Madrid. The event brought together representatives from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Arab League Contact Group, and several key nations, including Spain, Slovenia, Norway, Ireland, and the European Union, to address the ongoing crisis in Palestine.

In his remarks, Minister Fidan called for intensified efforts to achieve Palestine’s full UN membership, urging international pressure on countries that oppose such moves. “It is essential to strengthen collective action to ensure Palestine’s recognition and membership in the UN. We must also pressure those who continue to block these efforts,” Fidan stated, according to a press release from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Fidan also advocated for greater international involvement in the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). “More countries must intervene to address the ongoing atrocities in Palestine,” he added.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to pursuing an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Palestine, the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the recognition of Palestine. “We will continue to take the necessary steps to achieve a two-state solution,” the ministry noted.

The meeting, which focused on key issues surrounding the Palestine-Israel conflict, also addressed the ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank. Participants discussed ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and the delivery of critical humanitarian aid to the region. The need for urgent international recognition of Palestine and actions towards a viable two-state solution were central themes of the discussions.

A joint statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting called on the global community to swiftly recognize Palestine and actively support efforts for a two-state solution. It emphasized the necessity of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the cessation of Israeli attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The statement also highlighted the urgent need for continuous humanitarian assistance to Gaza and reaffirmed support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

A follow-up meeting is planned for late September, during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, to further advance these critical discussions.
