Hpa-an’s Green City Transformation Nears Completion with 70 Percent of Project Finalized

Hpa-an, The Gulf Observer: Approximately 70 Percent of the ambitious project to transform Hpa-an, the capital of Kayin State, into a clean and green model city has been completed, according to U Saw Khin Maung Myint, Minister for Economic Affairs of the Kayin State government.
The initiative, which aims to position Hpa-an as a benchmark for cleanliness and environmental sustainability among Myanmar’s state and regional capitals, is progressing steadily with a strong focus on urban beautification and waste management.
Current efforts are directed toward maintaining cleanliness, especially at key entry points and tourist-heavy areas, as part of the city’s ongoing transformation. Seasonal flower planting is also being carried out during the rainy season to enhance visual appeal and promote green spaces.
To support the growing tourism sector, a local tourism management committee has been established under the regional tourism development programme. The committee is tasked with maintaining pleasant surroundings at major tourist sites, including the routes to Zwekabin Mountain, one of Hpa-an’s most visited natural landmarks.
Rubbish bins are being systematically installed along roadsides in tourist zones, and regular waste collection is carried out by volunteers and environmental conservation groups. The collected waste is managed monthly or bi-monthly, depending on the area.
The government hopes these improvements will not only elevate Hpa-an’s profile as an eco-conscious destination but also encourage community participation in maintaining sustainable urban practices.
With the majority of the work already complete, Kayin State authorities remain committed to making Hpa-an a shining example of green urban development in Myanmar.
