Indonesia and Turkiye Enhance Bilateral Defense Cooperation

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: In a significant move to bolster bilateral defense relations, Indonesia and Turkiye are set to take their cooperation in the defense sector to new heights. This development was highlighted by the visit of Indonesia’s Deputy Defence Minister Muhammad Herindra to Turkiye last week.

On Thursday, July 4, Deputy Defence Minister Herindra met with Turkish Defense Vice Minister Bilal Durdali and CEOs of several prominent Turkish defense companies, according to a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara. Herindra emphasized Turkiye’s role as an “important friend that has for a long time maintained defense cooperation with Indonesia.”

Herindra noted the extensive opportunities for both nations to expand their defense cooperation. He highlighted the potential for building mutual trust, enhancing military capacity, and developing the defense manufacturing sector. This visit marks Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its strategic partnership with Turkiye in defense and industrial cooperation.

During their meeting, Herindra and Durdali reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the robust cooperation between Indonesia and Turkiye. They underscored the importance of this partnership in contributing to global peace and stability.

Indonesian Ambassador to Turkey, Achmad Rizal Purnama, who accompanied Herindra, stated that Turkiye is an ideal partner for Indonesia in developing its defense industry. He pointed out that Turkiye is one of the few countries willing to engage in technology transfer with Indonesia, enhancing the defense industrial sector.

Ambassador Purnama suggested that the defense cooperation could be formalized in a strategic document outlining a long-term strategic partnership on defense industries. This document would serve as “deliverables” at future meetings between Indonesian and Turkish leaders.

During his visit, Herindra also met with representatives from FNSS, a Turkish armed combat vehicle manufacturer, and Turkish Aerospace (TUSAS). FNSS specializes in designing and producing various armored combat vehicles and has partnered with Indonesia’s state-owned PT Pindad in producing the medium tank, “Harimau.” TUSAS, a key player in the aviation and space industry, focuses on several strategic business areas, including national combat aircraft, aircraft, and helicopters.

The visit underscores the deepening defense ties between Indonesia and Turkiye, with both nations committed to enhancing their military capabilities and industrial cooperation.
