Indonesia Declares September 27 as National Comedy Day in Honor of Bing Slamet

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian government has officially declared September 27, the birth date of comedy icon Bing Slamet, as National Comedy Day to recognize the contributions of comedians to the country’s entertainment industry.
The announcement was made by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon during the 5th Indonesian Comedy Awards (ANUKOM), co-organized by the Indonesian Comedians Association (PaSKI) and private television channel RCTI in Jakarta. The minister formalized the decision through a ministerial decree, underscoring the government’s commitment to honoring national cultural figures.
In his remarks, Minister Zon expressed appreciation for the achievements and contributions of Indonesian comedians, noting that the designation of National Comedy Day had long been advocated by PaSKI and related organizations. “This initiative has long been pushed by comedians, who unanimously proposed that September 27 be declared Indonesia’s Comedy Day. We hope this momentum serves as a form of appreciation for Bing Slamet,” he said.
Highlighting the significance of the date, Zon emphasized Bing Slamet’s enduring influence on the nation’s comedy scene, as well as his accomplishments in music and film. “He was an inspiring comedian blessed with various talents, known for his work with the comedy group Kwartet Jaya and the musical group Eka Sapta. Moreover, he gained fame in the film industry, starring in dozens of films,” he remarked.
The minister expressed hope that National Comedy Day would be widely celebrated later this month by comedians and the general public.
The 2025 ANUKOM ceremony featured awards in multiple categories, including favorite male and female comedians, favorite stand-up comedian, and lifetime achievement. At the event, Minister Zon officially handed over the decree establishing National Comedy Day to PaSKI Chairman Sujarwo, popularly known as Djarwo Kuat.
