Indonesia Emphasizes Generation Z’s Role in Climate Mitigation
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has underscored the pivotal role of the younger generation, particularly Generation Z, in the collective efforts to mitigate climate change and achieve ambitious climate targets.
In a discussion held in Jakarta on Thursday, Franky Zamzani, the head of KLHK’s Mitigation Implementation Monitoring Sub-directorate, reiterated the commitment of countries that are signatories to the Paris Agreement to prevent a global temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Mitigation measures are imperative to realize this target, he emphasized.
Zamzani highlighted the indispensable role of Generation Z in climate mitigation efforts, emphasizing that addressing emissions reduction and environmental preservation cannot solely rely on the efforts of governments or corporations. Inclusivity is paramount for the success of the climate mitigation movement, particularly in Indonesia, which is currently undergoing a demographic dividend characterized by a burgeoning productive population. With the productive demographic set to peak in 2030, the involvement of the younger generation becomes even more critical in the coming years to achieve the government’s climate objectives.
The younger generation’s active participation from the outset is deemed crucial for effectively attaining the nation’s climate targets, Zamzani emphasized.
Echoing Zamzani’s sentiments, Suci Fitriya Tanjung, the Executive Director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) Jakarta, acknowledged significant progress in engaging the younger generation in various mitigation initiatives. To further enhance their involvement, Tanjung emphasized the importance of fostering effective communication channels that promote empowerment rather than instilling fear or anxiety. Encouraging transformative actions through tangible steps is essential, she emphasized, underscoring the profound impact even small individual actions can have in driving positive change.
As Indonesia and the global community continue their collective efforts to address the climate crisis, instilling optimism and a sense of empowerment among the younger generation remains paramount, ensuring their active participation in shaping a sustainable and resilient future for all.
