Indonesia Introduces New Student Admissions System with Four Admission Tracks
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti has announced the implementation of the New Student Admissions System (SPMB) starting in 2025, replacing the existing New School Participants Admissions System (PPDB).
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Mu’ti outlined the four admission tracks under SPMB: domicile or student residence, achievement, affirmative track, and transfer track. He emphasized that the zoning system is not the sole admission criterion, addressing public misconceptions regarding student enrollment.
The domicile track, formerly known as the zoning system, will undergo modifications to better align with local needs based on students’ areas of residence. The achievement track will recognize students with both academic and non-academic accomplishments, including those excelling in sports, arts, and leadership, as well as active participants in school organizations such as the Scouts.
The affirmative track is designed to support students with disabilities and those from underprivileged backgrounds, ensuring equal educational opportunities. Meanwhile, the transfer track will facilitate students whose parents have relocated for work, including special quotas for children of teachers teaching at specific schools.
Mu’ti stressed that the transition from PPDB to SPMB is more than a name change—it reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the education system for all. “We have submitted this draft to the president, and he has agreed with the substance of our proposal,” he stated.
The new system is the result of extensive studies conducted since the introduction of PPDB in 2017. The Ministry of Education is also working closely with the Ministry of Home Affairs and local governments to ensure the smooth implementation of SPMB in 2025.
