Indonesia Launches QRIS Payment System in Japan

Indonesia

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Bank Indonesia (BI) officially launched the use of the QR Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payment system for the Japanese market on Sunday, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Indonesian independence.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said the rollout represents not only the first expansion of QRIS beyond ASEAN but also a milestone in Indonesia’s efforts to facilitate cross-border payment systems.

“Since its launch six years ago, QRIS has become a game changer for the digital payment ecosystem and has strengthened Indonesia’s economic sovereignty,” Warjiyo noted.

He highlighted that QRIS users have now reached 57 million, expressing optimism that the expansion into Japan will further enhance bilateral economic cooperation.

In its initial stage, QRIS users in Indonesia can conduct transactions at 35 merchants in Japan by scanning the JPQR Global code using domestic payment applications. These include mobile banking services from 14 national and regional banks, as well as various mobile wallet platforms.

Looking ahead, Indonesia aims to expand merchant coverage in Japan to facilitate greater access for QRIS users, while also enabling Japanese consumers to make payments in Indonesia via QRIS through their domestic payment applications.

The launch was made possible through collaboration between Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), the Payment Japan Association (PJA), JPQR Global operator Netstars, and other stakeholders.

The cross-border rollout followed a series of technical preparations and a sandbox trial stage coordinated with Japanese payment system authorities, beginning in mid-May 2025.
