Indonesia Poised to Become ASEAN Hub for AI Development
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has the potential to become the center of artificial intelligence (AI) development within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) by fostering synergy among domestic stakeholders, Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics Nezar Patria stated on Wednesday.
In a statement from his office, Patria emphasized that strong collaboration among all relevant parties is crucial for Indonesia to craft the policies and initiatives necessary to fully harness AI’s potential.
To manage AI growth responsibly, the Indonesian Government has issued a circular on AI ethics, which underscores the importance of inclusion, transparency, security, accessibility, and respect for human rights. Patria highlighted that integrating these elements is vital to ensuring AI delivers equitable and wide-reaching benefits to all segments of society.
Patria also commended the efforts of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Research and Innovation Collaboration (KORIKA), an organization that has been instrumental in driving AI innovation in Indonesia. He noted that KORIKA consistently organizes the annual AI Innovation Summit (AIIS), a platform for discussing the latest developments in AI.
On a regional level, Patria mentioned that ASEAN has introduced the ASEAN Guideline on AI Governance and Ethics. This guideline aims to assist governments and organizations across Southeast Asia in the responsible design, development, and implementation of AI systems.
“The ASEAN guideline focuses on the principles of fairness, transparency, convenience, and humanity in AI use,” Patria explained. “By adhering to these principles, we can ensure that AI is utilized in a manner that enhances public welfare while remaining accountable and inclusive.
