Indonesia Pushes Research as Strategic Driver of Economic Growth

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Diktisaintek) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research as a key driver of economic growth and innovation.

Deputy Minister Stella Christie stressed that research must be seen as an investment rather than a financial burden. “Research is a motor that can directly drive the economy. Beyond discourse, research can deliver tangible results in both the short and long term,” she said on Sunday.

Through its Impactful Diktisaintek program, the ministry is guiding universities to transform research into solutions for national challenges, while also fostering closer collaboration between academia and industry. The initiative targets strategic sectors including food security, health, energy transition, and digitalization.

Christie underscored the importance of innovation in maximizing the value of Indonesia’s natural resources, noting the country’s global leadership in seaweed production and rising exports of patchouli leaves from Aceh. “Research gives birth to innovations that stimulate the economy, create jobs, and strengthen Indonesia’s global position,” she remarked.
