Indonesia Reaffirms Support for Palestine, Calls for Dialogue at UNHRC Session

Indonesia

Geneva, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono has reiterated the country’s commitment to contributing to the resolution of global humanitarian conflicts and disasters, including its firm support for Palestinian independence and efforts to end the conflict in Myanmar.

Speaking at the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva on Monday, Sugiono expressed deep concern over ongoing humanitarian crises worldwide, particularly in Palestine.

“With regard to the people of Palestine, Indonesia reaffirms its unwavering support for their inalienable rights,” the minister said, as monitored via the UN Web TV live stream in Jakarta.

He called for an immediate end to all forms of violence in Palestine and urged full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access. Indonesia, he stressed, supports the realization of a just and sustainable peace based on a two-state solution.

Addressing the situation in Myanmar, Sugiono underscored Indonesia’s commitment within Association of Southeast Asian Nations to push for the effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as the foundation for resolving the conflict.

He also conveyed Indonesia’s determination to strengthen the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) as a key regional mechanism for the protection and promotion of human rights across Southeast Asia.

While expressing concern over global conflicts and humanitarian disasters, Sugiono emphasized that sustainable solutions require genuine dialogue and constructive engagement grounded in objectivity.

“Upholding international humanitarian law is our collective obligation,” he stated, adding that durable peace cannot be imposed but must be built on trust and mutual respect.

The 61st session of the UNHRC, running from February 23 to March 31, 2026, marks a historic milestone as it is the first to be presided over by Indonesia through its Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Sidharto R. Suryodipuro.

During Indonesia’s presidency, key thematic priorities include the prevention of female genital mutilation, the promotion of a culture of peace, sustainable development financing, the rights of persons with disabilities, and the protection of children’s rights.
