Indonesia Targets Cooperation with Tajikistan to Develop Floating Photovoltaic Solar Power Plants

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono announced Indonesia’s intention to collaborate with Tajikistan in developing floating photovoltaic (FPV) solar power plants. The announcement came during a bilateral meeting with Tajikistan’s Minister of Water Resources and Energy, Daler Jum’a Shofaqir, held on the sidelines of the 3rd Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference on Tuesday, June 11.

Hadimuljono emphasized the importance of research on the environmental impacts of FPV facilities, the development of standards and guidelines for risk management in FPV installations, and the establishment of improved regulations and policies to support FPV project development.

In his statement, Hadimuljono praised Tajikistan’s advancements in renewable energy, particularly the Nurek Hydroelectric Plant, which has a capacity exceeding 3,000 MW and provides around 50% of the country’s annual energy needs. He noted, “Indonesia is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by transitioning to renewable energy sources, including the construction of hydroelectric dams.”

Highlighting Indonesia’s achievements, the minister noted that the country has built approximately 248 dams by 2024, with 187 constructed before 2015 and 61 between 2015 and 2024. The 2021-2030 RUPTL indicates that Indonesia’s hydropower potential can be increased to 16,027 MW. Of the 61 dams built during the 2015-2024 period, 43 have a hydroelectric potential of 255.15 MW. Furthermore, among the 248 dams, 246 have the potential to host FPV solar power plants, with a combined capacity of up to 13,575 MW.

Hadimuljono also expressed gratitude for Tajikistan’s participation in the 10th World Water Forum held in Bali from May 18-25, 2024. “Thank you very much for the participation of the Tajikistan delegation at the 10th World Water Forum, which added great value to the event. I believe our countries share a vision for efficient and integrated water resource management,” he affirmed.

Minister Shofaqir commended Indonesia’s success as the host of the 10th World Water Forum and expressed hope for continued Indonesian leadership in global water issues. “We invite Indonesia to partner with us in strengthening the global water agenda, alongside the Netherlands, Senegal, and the United Arab Emirates,” he stated. “We hope that Indonesia can continue its leadership in achieving resolutions and engage in interactive dialogue,” he added.

This prospective cooperation underscores the shared commitment of Indonesia and Tajikistan to advancing renewable energy and sustainable water resource management.
