Indonesia to Submit Second NDC Ahead of UN General Assembly

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia will submit its latest climate commitment, the Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), ahead of President Prabowo Subianto’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23.
Deputy Environment Minister Diaz Hendropriyono said following a meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday that the document would be filed with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat before the September 20 deadline.
“We must ensure that our Second NDC, our emissions reduction commitment for 2031–2035, is submitted no later than September 20, because the President will attend the UN General Assembly on the 23rd,” he stated.
The new NDC is being formulated in line with Indonesia’s economic growth scenarios of 6.3 percent, 7 percent, and 8 percent. Hendropriyono did not, however, disclose the specific emission reduction targets under each scenario.
Alongside the NDC, Indonesia is drafting its National Adaptation Plan (NAP) to enhance resilience to climate change. While submission of the NAP is not mandatory under the UNFCCC, it is regarded as critical for archipelagic nations such as Indonesia, which face acute vulnerabilities to rising sea levels, extreme weather, and other climate impacts. The government expects to submit the NAP by the end of this year.
Indonesia’s current Enhanced NDC pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89 percent through domestic efforts and up to 43.2 percent with international assistance by 2030.
The forthcoming Second NDC will outline Indonesia’s emission reduction commitments for the 2031–2035 period, setting the framework for the country’s long-term climate strategy in alignment with its development goals.
