Indonesia Unveils Energy Transition Strategies at ETC Meeting

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, presented Indonesia’s ambitious strategies for transitioning to clean energy during the 9th Energy Transition Council (ETC) Ministerial Meeting, held virtually on Wednesday.

In a statement released by his ministry and received here on Thursday, Minister Tasrif underscored Indonesia’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, citing the issuance of the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (E-NDC) document and the formulation of a roadmap for net-zero emissions (NZE) targets in the energy sector.

“We have enhanced our emission reduction target to 32 percent by 2030, as outlined in the E-NDC document. In the energy sector, we aim to reduce carbon emissions by 358 million tons, surpassing the initial target of 314 million tons,” stated Tasrif.

Highlighting Indonesia’s roadmap towards achieving NZE targets in the energy sector by 2060 or sooner, Tasrif emphasized the importance of a transition to clean energy.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has initiated steps to comply with the E-NDC, including the development of interconnected infrastructure such as electricity and gas networks to support regional energy integration and economic growth.

Tasrif further outlined plans for the development of a super grid, aimed at facilitating energy transition and bridging the gap between energy producers and consumers. He mentioned upcoming projects to build and link gas pipelines in Sumatra and Java, maximizing Indonesia’s national gas resources.

Emphasizing the need for accelerated technology development at the industrial level, Tasrif highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the mineral processing downstream industry to create an ecosystem conducive to energy transition and job creation.

The ETC, comprised of multilateral and regional organizations in sustainable development and finance sectors, was formed under the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). Launched on November 21, 2020, the council is co-led by COP26 President Alok Sharma and UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Sustainable Energy & CEO of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll), Damilola Ogunbiyi.

Minister Tasrif’s presentation underscores Indonesia’s proactive stance towards achieving sustainable and clean energy goals, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
