Indonesia Unveils Innovative Underground Stacked Stations for MRT in Jakarta

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia is breaking new ground in urban transportation with the construction of two groundbreaking underground stacked stations for the mass rapid transit (MRT) system in Jakarta. Positioned along the MRT line between Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar in central Jakarta, these stations are integral to the MRT Phase 2A project.
Weni Maulina, Director of Construction at PT MRT Jakarta, announced the milestone, stating, “These stations will be the first underground stacked stations in Indonesia.” The Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar Stations share a common design, situated at a depth of 28 meters below ground level.
The adoption of stacked platforms and tunnels is a response to the limited space available in these areas. Both stations, Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar, will feature four floors, with separate north and south lines on different levels.
The ongoing construction of MRT Phase 2A, the Harmoni-Sawah Besar-Mangga Besar line, commenced on June 25, 2022, and has achieved a progress rate of 25.54% as of January 25, 2024. The project encompasses a 5.8-kilometer route connecting Bundaran HI Station in downtown Jakarta with Kota Station in West Jakarta, passing through key stations including Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, and Glodok.
The ambitious construction is divided into two segments, with the first segment (Bundaran HI-Harmoni) targeted for completion in 2027, followed by the second segment (Harmoni-Kota) expected to be finalized in 2029. The overall project, costing Rp22.5 trillion (approximately US$1.44 billion), is funded through collaborative efforts between the governments of Indonesia and Japan.
The introduction of these innovative underground stacked stations signifies a leap forward in Jakarta’s urban infrastructure development, enhancing the efficiency and convenience of the MRT system while showcasing Indonesia’s commitment to pioneering solutions in public transportation.
