Indonesian and Australian Ministers Discuss Bilateral Defense and Security Cooperation

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: In a bilateral meeting held in Jakarta on Wednesday, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto, and Australian Home Affairs Minister Clair O’Neil deliberated on the potential for establishing robust cooperation in defense, counterterrorism, and maritime security between the two nations.

Tjahjanto, speaking on behalf of the Indonesian government, emphasized the significance of the longstanding and robust bonds shared between Indonesia and Australia. He underscored Australia’s esteemed position in Indonesia’s diplomatic relations and highlighted Australia’s high regard for Indonesia’s strategic importance.

In a press release issued by his office following the meeting, Tjahjanto reiterated the necessity of cooperation in defense to bolster the security and military capabilities of both nations. He proposed various avenues for collaboration, including personnel exchanges and joint military exercises, aimed at enhancing defense readiness and responsiveness.

Furthermore, Tjahjanto stressed the imperative of joint efforts in cybersecurity to safeguard sensitive state information from unauthorized access, emphasizing the critical role of cybersecurity in contemporary security paradigms.

The discussion also encompassed plans for the upcoming 10th Indonesia-Australia Ministerial Council Meeting on Law and Security, as well as the scheduled 5th Sub-regional Meeting on Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Security to be hosted by Indonesia later this year.

Expressing optimism for the future of bilateral relations, Tjahjanto articulated confidence in Indonesia and Australia’s ability to elevate their partnership to new heights through active participation and cooperation in the planned ministerial meetings.
