Indonesian FM Addresses Gaza Genocide at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
Rio de Janeiro, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi took a strong stance against Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. Minister Marsudi condemned Israel for its continued aggression, emphasizing the urgency for the G20 to address the dire situation unfolding in the Palestinian enclave.
In a press statement released from her office on Thursday, Minister Marsudi underscored the significance of the G20 spotlighting the Gaza crisis, given that all members of the United Nations Security Council are part of this influential group. She asserted, “It is critical for the G20 to spotlight these issues, considering that all members of the UN Security Council are part of the G20.”
Minister Marsudi expressed her concern over the prolonged conflict in Gaza, which has endured for 138 days, resulting in the tragic loss of over 29 thousand Palestinian lives, including women and children. She unequivocally stated, “Nothing can justify Israel’s unlawful acts during its aggression on Gaza.”
During her address to the G20 states, Minister Marsudi characterized the situation as not just a humanitarian disaster but also a geopolitical nightmare. She warned that the repercussions of the conflict extend beyond regional boundaries and pose threats to global stability and security.
The Indonesian minister outlined multilateral measures to address the crisis, advocating for the immediate implementation of a lasting ceasefire through any necessary means. She emphasized, “This ceasefire will be a fundamental game-changer to stop the bloodshed and humanitarian crisis, as well as pave the way to a conducive situation towards negotiations on the implementation of the two-state solution.”
Minister Marsudi urged G20 countries to avoid double standards when dealing with Palestinian issues and emphasized the need for uniform treatment compared to other global concerns. She called on member states to prevent the destruction of essential infrastructure in Palestine, including hospitals, schools, and refugee camps.
Furthermore, Minister Marsudi urged G20 states to increase relief funding for Palestine and drew attention to the potential adverse impacts of technological advancements on global security. She cautioned that advanced technology could exacerbate armed conflicts and highlighted the collective responsibility of G20 member states to contribute to peace-building efforts and global stability.
The Indonesian minister concluded her speech by noting that almost all G20 delegates expressed their concern over the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, highlighting the international consensus on the urgency of addressing this critical issue.
