Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has set an ambitious target of welcoming one to 1.5 million Chinese tourists in 2024.

Wisnu Sindhutrisno, the ministry’s Regional I Director of Tourism Marketing, announced this goal during a statement in Badung, Bali, on Saturday, January 20.

Sindhutrisno highlighted the success of the previous year, surpassing the target of 361 thousand Chinese tourists with an actual arrival of 707 thousand. He emphasized the adjustment of the target for 2024 to meet the evolving travel patterns of Chinese tourists, particularly the increasing number of young travelers engaging in longer trips focused on adventure, nature, and cultural experiences.

The push for equal distribution of tourism benefits is evident in the ministry’s strategy, incorporating tourism villages, homestays, and community-run destinations in promotional programs targeted at the Chinese audience. Activities such as chocolate making in Yogyakarta and buffalo washing are specifically encouraged to enhance the overall tourist experience.

Sindhutrisno noted that the observed change in travel preferences among Chinese tourists, particularly an inclination towards hiking, nature adventures, and diving, was facilitated by internet exposure. Highlighting China’s four annual holiday seasons, he encouraged travel during off-peak times, including February-March and September-October.

The director identified key cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing, along with Hong Kong and Taiwan, as having the most potential for direct flights to Indonesia. Despite being the fourth-ranked nationality in terms of foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia, especially Bali, the ministry aims to elevate China’s position through intensified promotional efforts.

Sindhutrisno revealed ongoing collaborations with major players in China’s tourism industry to increase arrivals and enhance air transport connectivity. As the Chinese Government appears more receptive to overseas travel, the Ministry of Tourism is optimistic about achieving its ambitious target and fortifying the bond between China and Indonesia’s tourism sectors.
