Iran Calls for Stronger CSTO Cooperation

Iran

Duma, The Gulf Observer: Iran has proposed a set of initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation among member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), emphasizing the need to counter external pressures and strengthen regional security. The proposals were presented by Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, during the 18th General Session of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly hosted by the Russian State Duma on Monday.

In his address, Azizi warned that the “illegal and brutal” sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union have endangered public health and disrupted access to essential medicines for certain vulnerable patient groups in some member countries. He described the sanctions as a “clear manifestation of economic terrorism” and a serious violation of civil rights.

The Iranian lawmaker further stated that the increasing presence and influence of trans-regional powers have failed to contribute to regional stability. Instead, he argued, their involvement has fueled insecurity, instability, and greater divergence among countries in the region.

Underscoring the importance of collective action, Azizi stressed that CSTO member states should pursue a foreign policy focused on security-building and de-escalation. He called for strengthening active parliamentary diplomacy as a key mechanism to advance cooperation, reduce tensions, and promote shared security objectives.

The session brought together delegations from CSTO member states to discuss pressing regional security issues, legislative cooperation, and ways to enhance the bloc’s effectiveness amid global geopolitical challenges.
