Joe Biden Withdraws from 2024 Presidential Race, Endorses Kamala Harris
Washington, DC, The Gulf Observer: In a surprising turn of events, US President Joe Biden has announced the end of his reelection campaign following a loss of confidence among fellow Democrats regarding his mental acuity and ability to defeat Donald Trump. This development has left the presidential race in an unprecedented situation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Biden confirmed that he will continue to serve as president and commander-in-chief until the end of his term in January 2025 and plans to address the nation later this week.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.
In a separate post, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic presidential nominee.
“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” he stated. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
If nominated, Harris will become the first Black woman to run at the top of the ticket in the country’s history.
Biden’s decision follows significant public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party officials after his disappointing performance in a recent televised debate against Republican rival Donald Trump.
In response to Biden’s announcement, Trump told CNN on Sunday that he believes Harris will be easier to defeat in November’s election than Biden.
A CNN reporter noted on X that Trump made these comments shortly after Biden’s declaration.
This unexpected shift in the Democratic primary race marks a critical juncture for the party as it prepares for the upcoming election.
