Karabakh and East Zangezur See Influx of Over 500,000 Visitors Amid Ongoing Reconstruction

Baku, The Gulf Observer: The 2020 Patriotic War remains a defining chapter in Azerbaijan’s modern history, during which the Azerbaijani people and Armed Forces demonstrated unmatched unity, courage, and determination, successfully liberating territories that had remained under occupation for decades. This decisive victory was not only a milestone for the country’s territorial integrity but also a broader triumph symbolizing justice, national identity, and the principles of state-building.
Today, the once war-torn regions of Karabakh and East Zangezur stand as beacons of hope, no longer defined by destruction but by rapid development, infrastructure renewal, and cultural restoration. The comprehensive reconstruction efforts spearheaded by President and Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev have breathed new life into these regions, turning them into hubs of socio-economic revival and national pride.
The restoration and advancement of these areas have been placed at the heart of Azerbaijan’s national agenda, symbolizing the nation’s resurgence and unwavering unity. Development initiatives go far beyond physical rebuilding, encompassing the revitalization and international promotion of Azerbaijan’s cultural and historical legacy.
In July alone, more than 500,000 individuals visited the liberated territories — a testament to the region’s growing appeal and transformation. Among the visitors were returning residents, former internally displaced persons (IDPs), foreign tourists, business leaders, cultural ambassadors, and international media. Their presence highlights not only the safety and vitality of these regions but also their increasing importance as centers of investment, tourism, and innovation.
Economic revival in Karabakh and East Zangezur is being driven by advancements across agriculture, industry, and services, supported by robust state-led infrastructure programs and a conducive investment climate. This progress is fostering job creation, improving livelihoods, and enhancing the overall quality of life for returning residents. Tourism, in particular, has emerged as a dynamic contributor to local economic growth.
A landmark moment underscoring this transformation was the hosting of the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Khankendi earlier this month. In his address, President Ilham Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s comprehensive development projects, the “Great Return” program facilitating the voluntary return of IDPs, and the country’s growing contributions to regional energy security, environmental efforts, and transport connectivity.
Further cementing the region’s cultural revival, the 3rd Global Media Forum was held in the city of Shusha — now internationally recognized as Azerbaijan’s cultural capital. The forum brought together global media professionals and experts, offering them firsthand insight into the region’s remarkable recovery and rich heritage. Shusha is increasingly emerging as a focal point of cultural diplomacy and intercultural dialogue.
High-level visits by Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov, and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Azerbaijan, particularly the liberated areas, during the ECO Summit, further affirmed the growing regional solidarity and strategic partnerships. These visits have opened new avenues for deeper political, cultural, and economic cooperation among brotherly nations.
Adding to the cultural momentum, the Vaqif Poetry Days were successfully held once again in Shusha, celebrating the literary legacy of poet Molla Panah Vaqif and showcasing the spiritual resilience and deep cultural traditions of the Azerbaijani people.
Each new infrastructure project — from roads and residential complexes to schools and industrial parks — reflects a confident stride toward a sustainable and prosperous future. Karabakh and East Zangezur are being reshaped into vibrant epicenters of opportunity and innovation.
The transformation of the liberated territories is not simply a return to physical lands but a powerful reaffirmation of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, national unity, and historical justice. Through steadfast leadership, a clear strategic vision, and the collective will of its people, Azerbaijan is building not only a better tomorrow but also a legacy of pride, strength, and enduring peace.
