Kazakh President Addresses UN Special Session on Launch of International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development

Astana, The Gulf Observer: The press service of the Akorda presidential residence on Friday released the address delivered by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the special session of the UN General Assembly marking the launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, according to media reports.
In his remarks, President Tokayev said it was a “great honor” to address the distinguished gathering on the occasion of inaugurating a year dedicated to recognizing and empowering volunteers worldwide. He noted that the initiative, proposed by Kazakhstan in collaboration with international partners, reflects a shared global vision to strengthen the role of volunteers in advancing national and international development.
The President highlighted the growing significance of volunteerism as a transformative force that fosters civic engagement, supports vulnerable communities, and accelerates progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “In today’s complex world, volunteers fulfill an important mission of protecting lives, reaching the most vulnerable, and building trust and solidarity across societies,” he stated.
Tokayev commended the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme for expanding its global network and bringing together people from diverse backgrounds. He noted that beyond the UN framework, volunteer initiatives mobilize hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
Referring to Kazakhstan’s own efforts, the President said volunteerism has become an active part of public life in the country. He pointed to the national campaign “Taza Kazakhstan” (Clean Kazakhstan), which engages thousands of citizens in restoring natural landscapes and promoting environmental responsibility, aligning with UN-led global sustainability efforts.
He also welcomed the development of Almaty as a regional hub for UN-supported cooperation, following the establishment of the UN Regional Centre for the SDGs for Central Asia and Afghanistan. The opening of the UN Volunteers Sub-Regional Office in Almaty, he said, further demonstrates Kazakhstan’s commitment to civic participation and global partnership.
Tokayev stressed that global challenges can only be addressed through “collective action and mutual trust,” inviting volunteers from around the world to participate in UN initiatives focused on environmental protection, social inclusion, and youth empowerment. He called for strengthened partnerships to broaden opportunities, particularly for young people, women, and populations living in remote areas.
As the international community approaches the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the President urged a renewed commitment to the values of solidarity, cooperation, and investment in people to build a more just and sustainable world.
“Kazakhstan will continue to work with all Member States and civil society to support meaningful volunteer activities throughout this landmark year and beyond,” President Tokayev affirmed in his address.
