Kazakhstan Embeds Green Economy Indicators in Regional Development Plans
Astana, The Gulf Observer: The Green Economy Transition Council, chaired by Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, convened to review progress towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and reducing energy output, as outlined in the Head of State’s Address. The meeting, highlighted by the Government’s press service, underscored Kazakhstan’s commitment to sustainable development.
Reports presented by International Green Technologies and Investment Projects Center CEO Didar Karimsakov and regional governors showcased significant advancements in meeting established goals. Over the past decade, Kazakhstan has developed its green economy transition concept, with renewables now comprising 4.5% of the energy mix. Production waste treatment has risen to 35%, while consumption efficiency stands at 39%, demonstrating strides towards environmental sustainability.
Prime Minister Bektenov emphasized the importance of adopting best practices to achieve outlined goals, noting the interest of businesses from developed countries in investing in Kazakhstan’s green initiatives. Plans were set forth for the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, Atameken Chamber, and associated organizations to discuss co-financing initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainability efforts from 2025 to 2027.
Territorial development also received significant attention, with notable achievements in North Kazakhstan where 174 renewable energy sources generate 70.3 MW of power. In the Akmola region, emissions from enterprises have been slashed by 96% compared to 2021, with green energy now constituting 74% of the regional energy sector. Zhambyl region outlined plans to refurbish 257 water facilities by 2025 to bolster efficient water resource management.
Prime Minister Bektenov directed regional akimats and relevant state bodies to incorporate action plans aligned with green economy indicators into regional development strategies. A draft 2024-2030 action plan is currently being formulated to guide Kazakhstan towards achieving its ambitious green economy objectives.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of Kazakhstan’s commitment to sustainable development and the continued integration of green practices into national policies, underscoring the country’s proactive stance in addressing environmental challenges while fostering economic growth.
