Viscri

Viscri, The Gulf Observer: King Charles III’s House in Viscri, the renowned heritage site in Transylvania, has inaugurated a new exhibition dedicated to acclaimed Romanian artist Constantin Flondor, reinforcing its mission to connect cultural heritage with contemporary artistic expression.

Titled Garden Empire/Împărăția Grădinii, the exhibition opened on August 19 and will run until November 2. Curated by Cosmin Florea and Irina Motroc, it showcases more than six decades of Flondor’s creative journey through painting, drawing, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, and experimental film. The display highlights his artistic evolution since the 1970s, with a particular focus on his latest works that continue to explore nature as both inspiration and collaborator.

“It is a privilege to host these works, which invite us to contemplate nature with attentive eyes,” said Raluca Grigore, manager of The King’s House. She emphasized that the exhibition reflects King Charles III’s belief in finding belonging through nature, aligning with the site’s permanent Transylvania Florilegium collection of botanical illustrations.

The exhibition forms part of SIT 2025 – Sessions in Transylvania, an independent platform fostering dialogue between rural heritage and contemporary art in villages such as Alma Vii and Viscri. Past editions have celebrated artists including Ștefan Câlția, Sorin and Adrian Ilfoveanu, and Peter Jecza.

Hosted in the repurposed barn of the royal property, the event is organized in partnership with Jecza Gallery and the Mihai Eminescu Trust Foundation.

Reflecting on his work, Flondor remarked, “The true patron of this exhibition is nature. I am more of a painter of observation and admiration, one who wishes to understand, to notice, to contemplate, and to pass on this sense of wonder.”

Since opening to the public in 2022, The King’s House in Viscri has welcomed over 75,000 visitors, with most profits reinvested into local heritage and community initiatives.
