Kuwait Celebrates 65 Years of Independence and 35 Years of Liberation with Pride and National Unity
Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: The State of Kuwait is proudly commemorating the 65th anniversary of its National Day and the 35th anniversary of its Liberation Day, two historic milestones that embody the nation’s resilience, sovereignty, and unwavering national spirit.
On this distinguished occasion, H.E. Ambassador Nassar Abdulrahman J. Almutairi joined the Kuwaiti people in celebrating these cherished national anniversaries, which reflect Kuwait’s rich history, notable achievements, and enduring commitment to unity, progress, and stability.
Flag-Raising Ceremony Marks the Official Launch of Celebrations
National celebrations were formally inaugurated with a flag-raising ceremony held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir. The ceremony was attended by His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, President of the Supreme Judicial Council and Chief Justice of the Court of Cassation Dr. Adel Majed Bouresli, alongside senior state officials and dignitaries.
Upon the arrival of His Highness the Amir’s motorcade, a 21-gun salute was fired in his honor. His Highness was received by members of the armed forces, police, and the National Guard. The national flag was hoisted, the national anthem was played, and the military band presented a ceremonial performance that reflected the solemnity and pride of the occasion.
Similar flag-raising ceremonies are taking place across Kuwait’s six governorates, accompanied by a vibrant festive atmosphere and a wide array of cultural, national, and community events. These celebrations aim to preserve the historical significance and national values associated with National Day and Liberation Day, ensuring their enduring presence in the collective memory of the Kuwaiti people.
Honoring History, Sacrifice, and National Achievement
The national celebrations offer an opportunity to reflect on Kuwait’s achievements at both regional and international levels, while honoring the sacrifices made during the Iraqi invasion of 1990. Tribute is paid to all those who contributed to the liberation of Kuwait and the restoration of its freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
For visitors and those closely connected to the country, National Day provides a meaningful insight into Kuwait’s culture, heritage, and national identity. The occasion commemorates the accession of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the founding father of modern Kuwait, whose visionary leadership guided the nation toward independence, constitutional governance, and democratic institutions.
Kuwait National Day 2026: Key Dates
In 2026, Kuwait’s National Day will be observed on Wednesday, February 25, followed by Liberation Day on Thursday, February 26. As the holidays fall mid-week, extended public holidays are anticipated, subject to official announcements. Traditionally, government offices, banks, and many private institutions suspend operations during this period, while essential and digital services continue uninterrupted.
The Historical Significance of February 25
Although Kuwait attained full independence from Britain on June 19, 1961, National Day celebrations were later moved to February 25 due to extreme summer temperatures that limited public participation. In 1963, the date was officially designated to coincide with the accession of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah in 1950. Revered as the architect of modern Kuwait, he successfully negotiated the termination of the 1899 protectorate agreement and laid the foundations of constitutional governance that continue to shape the nation today.
His principled stances toward his homeland, the Arab world, and the Islamic nation have rightfully earned him the title of “Prince of Humanity.”
Deep-Rooted Gulf Relations and Regional Cooperation
The inauguration of this road stands as a testament to the esteemed position this great leader holds in the hearts of the Qatari Emir, government, and people, coinciding with Qatar’s participation alongside Kuwait in celebrating the 58th anniversary of Kuwait’s National Day and the 28th anniversary of its Liberation.
Trade relations between Qatar and Kuwait continue to witness sustained growth. The shipping line launched between Hamad Port and Kuwait’s Shuwaikh Port in August 2017 has played a pivotal role in doubling trade volumes and facilitating the regular transport of foodstuffs and essential commodities between the two countries.
A Steady Course Toward Prosperity and Global Leadership
Today, Kuwait celebrates under the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, supported by the unwavering loyalty of its people, as the nation continues its steady course toward security, stability, and prosperity. Since independence, Kuwait has achieved remarkable progress in comprehensive development, guided by the legacy of its forefathers and the dedication of its citizens.
Kuwait has long pursued a moderate and balanced foreign policy, founded on openness, dialogue, friendship, and peace, while prioritizing human development and economic prosperity. This approach is implemented through active cooperation with regional and international organizations, contributing to global security and stability.
Through its pioneering role within the Gulf Cooperation Council, Kuwait has strengthened its relations with sisterly and friendly nations and emerged as a global leader in humanitarian aid. Its commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation through the United Nations and Arab and regional organizations has further reinforced its standing on the world stage.
Achievements and Aspirations
During 2024, Kuwait recorded a series of significant accomplishments that enhanced its regional and international leadership and enriched its developmental, intellectual, and cultural landscape. These achievements resulted from coordinated governmental and private-sector efforts, coupled with strong national determination. They ranged from proactive diplomacy and major development projects to legislative reforms, advances in global indicators, and notable scientific, cultural, medical, and sporting successes.
These accomplishments reaffirm Kuwait’s ability to advance steadily toward its comprehensive development goals, adapt to global challenges, and fulfill the aspirations of its people—positioning the State of Kuwait as a model of progress, stability, and constructive engagement both regionally and internationally.
