Vientiane, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Friday urged all parties to uphold peace, pursue mutual benefit, and promote cooperation to build a brighter future for East Asia and the world. Speaking at the 19th East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Laos, Premier Li made a three-point proposal emphasizing the need for peace, inclusive growth, and regional cooperation amid global challenges.
In his address, Li highlighted the turbulent and changing global landscape, with a lack of momentum in economic recovery. He noted that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, principles that remain highly relevant in today’s world of instability. He stressed that peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and equality are critical for Asia’s ongoing development and stability.
“The Five Principles are not outdated but remain enduring and valuable in today’s world,” Li stated, underscoring their continued importance in upholding international fairness and justice.
Premier Li called on all nations to uphold peace and tranquility, reiterating China’s support for ASEAN-centered, open, and inclusive regional governance. He emphasized the need for regional security measures based on extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits to prevent conflict and instability.
Li also highlighted China’s commitment to mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, calling for joint efforts to implement the Global Development Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping. He encouraged increased investment in green transformation, digital economies, and other sectors essential for regional development. Li stressed the importance of universally beneficial and inclusive growth.
On the topic of promoting openness and cooperation, Li called for the comprehensive implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the acceleration of the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area. He urged against politicizing economic and trade issues, advocating for deeper regional economic integration.
Regarding the South China Sea, Premier Li reaffirmed China’s commitment to peace and stability in the region, stating that China adheres to international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He expressed China’s commitment to resolving differences through dialogue and consultation and to continuing practical cooperation at sea. Li also highlighted ongoing consultations between China and ASEAN on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and the goal of concluding it promptly.
Premier Li concluded by calling on countries outside the region to respect and support the joint efforts of China and ASEAN nations in maintaining regional peace and stability, encouraging a constructive approach to the challenges facing the region.
