Macron Condemns Israeli Plan for Gaza City, Proposes UN-Mandated Stabilisation Mission

Macron

Paris, The Gulf Observer: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday sharply criticised Israel’s plan to expand military operations and take control of Gaza City, calling it “a disaster of unprecedented gravity” and warning it would lead to a “headlong rush into permanent war.” He urged the immediate establishment of a United Nations–mandated international coalition to stabilise the Gaza Strip.

“This war must end now with a permanent ceasefire,” Macron said in a statement, describing Israel’s strategy as one that would deepen the crisis and prolong suffering. “Israeli hostages and the people of Gaza will continue to be the primary victims of this strategy.”

His remarks came after Israel’s security cabinet last week approved an expansion of operations in Gaza City and the Mawasi camps, effectively laying the groundwork for re-occupation. The decision has drawn criticism both domestically and internationally.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the move in a press conference on Sunday, insisting Israel is “applying force judiciously” and that the military has “no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas.” Netanyahu said Israeli forces currently control 70–75 percent of Gaza but face “two remaining strongholds” in Gaza City and central Al Mawasi.

Macron warned that such actions would escalate the conflict indefinitely and underscored the need for a UN-led stabilisation mission to secure the Gaza Strip, protect civilians, and support future Palestinian governance.

“The Security Council must now work to establish this mission and give it a mandate,” Macron said, adding that he had instructed his teams to engage with international partners “without delay.”

The French leader’s proposal follows his recognition of a Palestinian state last month, a move that spurred similar recognitions by Britain and Canada.
