Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The two largest Islamic social organizations in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, jointly issued statements on Friday expressing their optimism for a conducive political climate leading up to and following the upcoming presidential election.

PBNU Secretary General Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) commended the smooth progress of the election campaign, highlighting the absence of disruptions and incidents that could hinder the democratic process. “We hope this positive trajectory continues until the completion of the election, regardless of the outcome,” said Gus Ipul during the joint press conference.

While acknowledging the heated political atmosphere preceding the presidential election, Gus Ipul emphasized his belief that all parties involved would navigate these challenges responsibly and view them as integral to the dynamics of a democratic system. He stressed that the election is a democratic process that, once concluded, should lead to national unity and collaborative efforts for a better future.

Muhammadiyah Secretary General Abdul Mu’ti echoed these sentiments, urging all parties to accept the election results as a reflection of the people’s choice and the embodiment of national sovereignty. Mu’ti advised both winning and losing parties to demonstrate humility, putting the interests of the nation above personal or group agendas.

“Post-election, it is crucial for the victorious to remain humble and the defeated to accept the outcomes graciously. Unity should prevail, and a spirit of reconciliation must guide our actions,” added Mu’ti. He emphasized the need to avoid a “winner takes it all” scenario, promoting the idea that the democratic pillars of Indonesian society include all political factions.

Gus Ipul and Mu’ti jointly expressed their hope that, in the event of disputes over election results, parties would refrain from mobilizing crowds and instead resort to legal mechanisms to address concerns. The leaders of NU and Muhammadiyah emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democracy and working collaboratively for the nation’s progress, irrespective of individual political affiliations.

As Indonesia prepares for the upcoming presidential election, these statements from NU and Muhammadiyah underscore the significance of a peaceful, transparent, and inclusive democratic process in fostering national unity and progress.
