Malaysia and Indonesia Ready to Cooperate in Peacekeeping Mission to Gaza Strip

Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: In a significant move towards regional cooperation, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced his government’s readiness to collaborate with Indonesia in deploying peacekeeping forces to the Gaza Strip, contingent upon a mandate from the United Nations (UN).

The announcement came during a phone call on Monday with Indonesia’s President-elect and Defense Minister, Prabowo Subianto. The conversation, which lasted three minutes, was highlighted in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Prime Minister Anwar shared that he and President-elect Prabowo discussed various pressing issues, including Prabowo’s recent efforts in representing Indonesia on the global stage and promoting international collaboration and peace. “I also welcomed the idea of cooperation in the Malaysia-Indonesia international peacekeeping mission, and the possibility of expanding this collaboration to the ASEAN regional level,” Anwar stated.

Anwar further expressed his well-wishes for Prabowo, who recently underwent a high-risk surgery on his left leg, hoping for his swift recovery to resume his responsibilities.

In anticipation of potential UN peacekeeping duties in Gaza, the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) are preparing 1,394 personnel to ensure security, reconstruct public facilities, and provide medical services. TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto mentioned that an engineering battalion, capable of rebuilding homes and public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and houses of worship, would be part of the deployment. The TNI also stands ready to deliver humanitarian aid, including a hospital ship, contingent upon a UN mandate and a ceasefire.

The need for peacekeeping forces arises from the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel, which escalated following a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023. According to Al Jazeera, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 37,834 Palestinian civilians and injuries to approximately 86,858 others as of June 29. Many of the casualties in Gaza are reported to be women and children, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Malaysia and Indonesia’s commitment to a joint peacekeeping mission underscores the importance of regional cooperation in addressing global conflicts and humanitarian needs. The involvement of ASEAN countries in such initiatives could pave the way for broader regional stability and peace.
