Malaysia Signs Memorandum to Purchase Turkish Corvette Warships
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: In a significant step towards enhancing their naval capabilities, Malaysia has signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase three corvette warships from Turkiye. This development was announced by Türkiye’s Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) on Monday.
The formal ceremony took place in the Turkish capital, Ankara, where Malaysia’s Defence Minister, Mohamed Khaled Nordin, presented the letter of acceptance for the procurement of the naval vessels. These vessels are to be constructed by the Turkish defence firm STM.
SSB President Haluk Gorgun, who was present at the event, hailed the memorandum as a new chapter in the strategic partnership between the defence industries of Malaysia and Turkey.
“The successful execution of this project will ensure that the Turkish defence industry is prioritised as a provider in the Royal Malaysian Navy’s other projects in the 15 to 5 Transformation Program to be implemented in the coming period,” Gorgun stated. He emphasized that Türkiye aims to “develop together with friendly and brotherly countries, sharing our technologies, know-how, and expertise in the defence industry.”
This agreement marks a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between Malaysia and Turkey, particularly in the defence sector, and is expected to bolster the operational capabilities of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
