Memorial Service Held for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: A solemn memorial service for the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyen Phu Trong, took place at 1pm on Friday at the National Funeral Hall at 5 Trần Thánh Tông, Hanoii. Concurrent services were held in his hometown of Đông Hội Commune, Đông Anh District, Hà Nội, and at the Independence Palace in Hồ Chí Minh City.

Among the distinguished attendees at the National Funeral Hall were State President Tô Lâm, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn, Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Standing Member Lương Cường, and former high-ranking Party and State officials.

Delivering the funeral eulogy, State President Tô Lâm expressed the profound sense of loss felt by the nation. “The passing of Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng is a huge and irreparable loss for our Party, our nation, and our people. Our country has lost a talented leader. The world communist and progressive movement has lost a sharp theorist. International friends have lost a sincere friend and close comrade. The family, clan, and homeland in Đông Hội have lost an outstanding son,” he said.

Professor, Doctor, and Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng’s nearly 60 years of dedicated revolutionary activities left an indelible mark on Việt Nam. His intellectual prowess and sharp insights contributed to a valuable ideological and theoretical framework for Việt Nam’s revolutionary path in the modern era.

President Lâm praised Trọng’s ability to inspire and lead the Party, people, and army with his intelligence, humanistic spirit, noble compassion, strong will, and determination. Trọng exemplified the honour of a communist soldier who served the Fatherland and the people with utmost dedication, embracing the belief that “Honour is the most noble and sacred thing.”

Throughout his life, Trọng prioritized building and rectifying the Party and political system. Under his leadership, the Party issued a thematic resolution on constructing a law-governed socialist state of the people, by the people, and for the people. As State President and Chairman of the National Assembly, he was committed to fostering a legislative body that truly represented the people, embodying democracy and safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the populace.

Lâm highlighted Trọng’s profound political vision, noting his contributions to elevating strategic thinking and advancing Vietnamese defence, security, and foreign affairs through “bamboo diplomacy.” Trọng steadfastly held the belief that the people are the foundation of the Party, declaring that “the people are the subject, the centre of the đổi mới (renewal) process.”

Following the service, the casket of Party leader Nguyễn Phú Trọng, draped in the national flag, was transported from the National Funeral Hall to Mai Dịch Cemetery for the burial service at 3pm.
